Social sustainability for schools

A five-day course on social sustainability and the role of schools in building a sustainable society, from early childhood to secondary education. It covers public awareness, ethics and culture, the Portuguese and European frameworks, and how to reorient curricula and school practice towards sustainability.

  • Effective communication: strategies, complex messages and messengers
  • Confronting vested interests; reasons for optimism
  • Changing consumption and production patterns
  • Individual choices and collective decision-making
Day 3Ethics, culture and equity
  • Sustainability as a moral imperative: ethical principles and the "ethic of time"
  • Continuity between past, present and future
  • Culture and sustainability: towards a common ethic
  • Education, ethics and change
  • Action at international, national and local level
Day 4Early childhood, Portugal and Europe
  • The contribution of early childhood education to a sustainable society
  • Eco-intelligent education and preconditions for young children’s learning
  • Cultural considerations, language and a sense of belonging
  • The Portuguese framework and sustainability projects from Portugal
  • The global framework and the EU's commitment to sustainable development
Day 5Reorienting education
  • Reorienting education to support sustainability; the importance of basic education
  • Curriculum and structural reform: a case study and reform at different scales
  • The contribution of environmental education
  • Conclusions, follow-up activities and dissemination
  • Certificates ceremony
